What Is Actually Hidden

People pray against crystal use without ever opening the word occult to see what it actually means: hidden, not evil. This piece traces that word back to its root, then goes further ~ into the piezoelectric physics your own skeleton runs on, the same principle that makes quartz keep time in a watch. The demonic accusation misses the actual hidden thing entirely.

There is a particular kind of message I’ve stopped being surprised by. Someone finds a photo of a shelf, or a sphere someones hand, or a mention of a stone they’ve been sitting with, and decides they know what’s happening inside them well enough to pray against it. Demonic is the word most often reached for. Sometimes witchcraft. Sometimes the gentler but no less final “opening a door you shouldn’t open.” I’ve had strangers tell me they’re praying for someones deliverance from something they’ve never asked them a single question about.

What interests me isn’t the hostility. Hostility toward things people don’t comprehend is old and unremarkable. What interests me is the word underneath the word. They’re reaching for occult even when they don’t say it, and as far as I can tell, not one of them has ever opened it to see what it actually holds.

Occultus. Latin. ~ The past participle of occulere, to cover over, to hide.

That’s the whole of it. Not evil. Not inverted. Hidden. The word has spent the last several centuries dragged toward darkness by people who needed a container for what frightened them, and the drag was so successful that most people who use the word now have no idea they’re using a word that simply means concealed. Astronomers still use it correctly, an occulted star is one that’s been hidden by something passing in front of it. The meaning never left. It just got buried under everything projected onto it.

So here is what I’d actually like to talk about with the people praying against others: what is hidden. Not what they imagine is hidden. What is.

Quartz is piezoelectric. Put pressure on it and it generates an electrical charge. Run a charge through it and it deforms with mechanical precision, which is the entire reason your watch keeps time and your phone can hold a signal. This isn’t folklore. It’s the physics that built the device you’re reading this on. Every quartz crystal is doing something that looks, from a certain angle, uncannily like translation, pressure becomes charge, charge becomes motion, one form of energy quietly rendered into another. Nobody accuses a wristwatch or their phone of witchcraft. The stone gets treated differently only when a person picks it up on purpose.

Here’s the part that actually stops me, and it’s the part almost nobody was ever taught. Your body runs on the same principle. Bone is built from hydroxyapatite arranged in a crystalline lattice, and it’s piezoelectric too, load-bearing stress on a bone generates the electrical signal that tells your body where and how to remodel it. That’s not metaphor. That’s how a fracture knows how to heal along the lines it must heal along. Collagen, the protein holding your connective tissue together, is wound into a helical crystalline structure that conducts signal through your body faster than the chemistry alone accounts for. Your teeth are dense hydroxyapatite crystal, among the hardest tissue the body makes, and they carry electrical potential the way the rest of the skeleton does. Your heart generates the strongest bioelectric field your body produces, measurable well outside your chest, and it does that work through tissue with its own crystalline architecture. Even the mechanism by which your eye converts light into a signal your brain can use runs on a piezoelectric conversion.

None of that came from a shelf of stones. It’s established physiology. And once you know it, the shelf of stones looks different, not because the stones became magic, but because you can finally see that you were never separate from what you were afraid of. The lattice in the quartz and the lattice in your own femur are built on the same underlying logic. You are, structurally, a crystalline being, and you were one before you ever picked up a rock.

What I’m saying is the body already runs on resonant, crystalline, bioelectric structure, and working consciously with mineral forms that share that structure is not an occult intrusion into a body that was otherwise free of such things. It’s a conversation between two systems that were already speaking a related language. Attunement, not intervention. Support for what the body already knows how to do.

The people praying against others have the geometry inverted. They’ve located the danger in the object and left the actual hidden thing untouched, which is that they, too, are walking around inside a crystalline architecture they were never taught to notice. And, they seem to have forgotten the frequency of love. I’m not interested in convincing them of anything. I gave up on that a while ago, it isn’t a good use of the time I have. But I’d like the record to say plainly, once, in my own words rather than a stranger’s projection, that the occult in the sense I mean it isn’t a door. It’s a study. And the thing that was hidden was never demonic. It was structural, and it was always this close, in the bones holding you upright while you spoke or wrote the prayer.

I go into greater depth on the Crystalline structure of the body over on Substack for those who ware interested.
